Daily Update

August 11, 1998

Fairbanks, AK to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory - 550 miles

Michel calls to tell us that he is now in Whitehorse, his first Canadian stop. He clears Canadian customs with no problems and is hosted by Jim McManus, one of the residents near Whitehorse. Jim is very knowledgeable about the area, and also hosted the 10 Kitfox pilots who toured Alaska in June.

Michel had Jim send this and the previous day's message via Jim's work email since Michel does not have access to his computer. Thanks for hosting Michel, Jim!

Read about Michels flight from Fairbanks to Whitehorse. He is fascinated with mooses (mice?, meeces?) and is tempted to land at every inviting field and sandbar.

Michel and Carlos' next stop should be Ft St. John or possibly Edmonton if they make good time today.

Flash Update 11:08 pm, 8/11/98:

Michel called from Grand Prarie, Alberta. Although very tired, he wanted to tell about his next two days route that will get him to Oshkosh. Wednesday night he will be staying in Regina,Saskatchewan and Thursday in Duluth, MN, USA.

Is there anyone at those airports who can give Michel and son Carlos a bed and a meal? Or even just drive them to a motel and restaurant? If so, please call Don Pearsall at (425)392-4627, or email kfbuildr@ix.netcom.com right away.

Thanks!

Message from Michel 8/11/98

I got up early, around 7 am. Aircraft activities had already started and I had plenty a work to do.

First of all, taking the batteries I left charging at the FSS station. Then, changing the coolant (since I used 100 % coolant, engine was running too hot) to a 50 % coolant/water mixture. Later trying to find the oil leakage origin and clean a little bit the aircraft.

Everything took us about three hours, but the leakage was not fixed. Then I met again A.J. Rosser, refuelled our aircrafts and took off to Northway. Following the Alaska Highway was easy, and easier to follow him. Of course, as everything was easy and I was enjoying the moment.

Soon the GPS stopped working. Carlos took the KF command and I started taking away the GPS from the instrument panel. The antenna cable disconnected from the BNC plug and I lost the system.

I put the unit attached to the windshield forward strut with the his antenna and got the system back. Then, I fixed the antenna cable together with the BNC connector ( not a soldering type one….I was lucky), and got again everything working properly. So, the unit was back in the panel and again I was able to look at the countryside. I approached the red Talorcraft (AJ didnīt knew about my intentions) and took some pictures. Then the “formation “ was lost and I didnīt see him until Northway.

As the day was beautiful, I descended very low to follow the rivers underneath trees level. Low passes everywhere and a full discovery of mooses and other animals were a real pleasure. That is the way I love flying !

I was even about to land in many places just for fun, but finally I didnīt  take the risk, as I have to get into Oshkosh where a lot of people wait for me. So, when approaching Northway, I got again that red Taylorcraft in sight. I landed just after him and we had lunch together.

Really the flight together wasnīt stopped...I just didnīt know he was just behind me, shooting at me with his onboard video cameras! He told me that it was clear I love flying. Just the way of following the rivers, wandering along instead of following the straight lines, climbing just the necessary to overfly the hills…

He was also enjoying the moment until suddenly, I pulled my Kitfox up and veered right about 180 degrees. He had to turn left climbing to avoid a middair!

It was drinking water in a small river and we wanted to see it closer. As I didnīt knew about A.J. tracking me, I just proceeded naturally!

From Northway, I called the 1-800-CANPASS number to have the customs ready at Whitehorse, got some charts, refuelled and soon, took off to Canada.
