Nome to Nenana, Alaska

Although Michel and son Carlos have not yet checked in with Mad-Osh Headquarters, wife Marie-Laure reports that Michel has indeed taken off from Nome and is now in Nenana, Alaska, just a bit south of Fairbanks.

The welcome was very nice;
After a so long time far from everybody I missed, there they were, waiting for me, at Milwaukee: my Wife, Sons, and friends Don & Diana.
So many things to tell…!

After again a short night, we met the next morning almost all the staff at EAA. They were great since the beginning to the end, and I can tell everybody that when Paul Poberezny kissed me as someone kiss his son, I was really happy.

It is a pleasure to stay with people that are doing so much for aviation and I would spend all my life talking with every one of them ! So, plenty of projects are waiting for my true arrival into Oshkosh with the Kitfox. The estimate  might be around August 15th.

So, after a full day stay there, Saturday 8th evening, I flew to Anchorage with my son Carlos where we arrived around 12 P.M. At 0615 am, we were again on our way into Nome, with the main idea of resting a little bit and fix the aircraft.

Upon landing one hour and half later, I proceeded to the weather office and soon was informed about prevailing and forecast weather: bad, worse and really worse! A front was coming from the east and visibility deteriorating. Freezing level was really low, and the situation could stay 3 or four days more. There was an opening in the sky and located eastwards of Nome, moving east. If I catch it, I will be able not to lose more days !
So, there I was, tired, and ready to go. Again Leigh Selig appeared immediately and helped me until my departure ….what a nice guy !

Ready to go!
"Ready to go Carlos?"
"Ready!"

So, again full throttle forward gave life to my little aircraft. A short take off and immediate turn to the East put this team underneath the clouds layer… 500 ft msl! I followed the coast line, but overseas; cloud layer and visibility were not a piece of cake, so to avoid problems, I decided to follow that coast from the safe side.

About half an hour later, the clouds base started lifting and breaking away, so I was able to go on top of them and and proceed direct to Galena. Weather briefing was very good !

Flying  along the coast, then on top of clouds, and direct to first stopover place was a delight. No airport taxes and crazy fees, no VFR along airways and under IFR rules, just plenty of good sense that makes our dreams to become true.

Country sights is a little bit different from Russia, and again huge open spaces were present. Following the coast line was beautiful. Even if the flight itself takes longer, it is an experience I would recommend to people flying around Alaska. It is really nice being able to fully enjoy the trip in a place were flight is popular .. Weather was quite good and both of us (my new navigator and I) followed the Yukon river as soon we got on top of it. That way we were conducted to Galena were we arrived after a 03:10 flight.

Galena is a nice place, but may be a little bit isolated. Aircraft activities seem low, but may be it was just a wrong sensation. The time of having lunch and refueling,   led us again flying. Where do I go ? To Nenana or to Fairbanks ?

Customs were already cleared at Nome, so I had the choice. The past experience in big airports wanted me to avoid them, but the need of buying some coolant, NiMH batteries charger (the one I had is 220 volts) and some oil, made Fairbanks the choice. Approach was straightforward, and so the procedures. Soon I was assigned a transponder squawk, and field became in view. And what a nice view !

Two parallel runways  with a water strip in the middle plenty of float aircraft, and not to forget the other water strip west and very close to the airport. My son was having fun looking at me and my big smile. I think that the kid was just myself !

Cleared to land rwy 19L, and to park the Kitfox in front of the tower, in the transit area. A few minutes later we were already inside the pilots lounge where there is a shower, telephone and beverages. There, there was a guy that looked very proficient in the area, and soon enough, I asked him to
suggest me everything. We was really kind and since then, we stayed together.

AJ Rosser has a full video equipped Luscombe, and films and edits videotapes that we can find at Sporty´s. Those videos are mainly from Alaska related flights. So, we spent the afternoon together and did some shopping driven by the FSS people. A lot a talking and a fast dinner readied us for a nice sleep. We did camp at the north east side of the field, were everything is conditioned for that purpose, and I finally was able to take some rest in a place I loved.
