I just moved to The Sea Ranch from Seattle with my 1993 Kitfox 4 NSI/CAP.
I am building a house now and have my Fox disassembled at Ocean Ridge AP.
I hope to get it flying again late next summer after the house is done.
Dan Crowe & Lisa Modlin, married just use different last
names.
Both of us are retired USAF, that's where we met.
Dan was a Crew Chief, then cross-trained to First Sergeant.
Lisa was an Environmental Control Systems Technician, then cross-trained to
Personnel.
We moved to Oxford, Mississippi after Dan retired and was picked up by the
Law School here at Ole Miss. He will graduate in less than 2 semesters.
2 kids, 17 & 13, boys
4 dogs, one Golden Retriever & 3 Mini dachshunds.
Just moved into our new house we had specially built with the attached
hangar space to complete our Outback.
Bought the kit when we went to OshKosh 2 years ago. Dan has been involved
with flying since he was 16 years old, a long time. I became interested
because my father was a pilot in the USAF. I can't pass my medical to be
able to get my pilot's license, I have MS, but that's okay because Dan and I
still fly. And at least I have taken the lesson's. I have my A.A.S. in
Aircraft Accessory Systems, B.S. in Professional Aeronautics & my M.A.S. in
Aeronautics, both from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Hobbies and interests: Remote Control Aviation/ Experimental Aircraft/ Mechanical engineering/Alternative energy/Hybrid vehicles/
Currently working on my Kitfox 5 safari with my father
who has wanted a kitfox since the late 80’s – Purchased 70% complete from New
York in Feb 2004 – late 1995 kit – almost ready to cover & install engine &
avionics. I am installing a Subaru EJ22 engine, on a custom mount, Naturally
aspirated, Aftermarket ignition & efi injection controller.
I guess its no surprise that I’m a certified aviation nut – My grandfather has
been into RC since its beginnings in the 1930’s and has been doing it ever
since – he passed it on to my father and he onto me from the first stages of
consciousness. I got my first flight box for my second birthday …..
18 years later on my 20th birthday, I received my first
hour of flight time in a Diamond Katana out of Watsonville, Ca. I’ve been
hooked on “the real deal” ever since. Completed Ground school last year at Cal
poly, SLO, and am looking forward to having the time (and money) to complete
flight training and get my certificate.
Born in British Columbia, Canada & then spent the first 11 years of my life
growing up on the big island, Hawai’i. Moved to Santa Cruz at 12 and then to
San Luis Obispo in 2000 to attend Cal poly. I love all the places I’ve lived
and spend as much time traveling back to Hawaii and Vancouver as possible. I
spend just about every other weekend in Santa Cruz and the weekdays in San
Luis Obispo.
I’ve worked at West Marine Products in Watsonville since 1999 doing product Testing and development. Great Company and fun projects to work on. I’ve designed & executed test protocols for inflatable boats, motors, anchors, Bilge pumps, Electrical systems products, 12V chargers, 12V Batteries, VHF radios, flashlights and more. Designed & developed several new products in this time as well.
I spent most weekends in Hawaii fishing offshore, and never miss a chance to get back out on the water. I run 30 miles offshore in Santa Cruz for Tuna and the fishing is eerily similar in a lot of ways to being 2 miles off Kona. I started sailing at 12, and sailed competitively in high school for 3 years. Purchased a Nacra 5.2 (like a high performance hobie cat) last year and am convinced that it takes two to really dance on the water. I have skippered a Santa Cruz 40 racing yacht in a few regattas and am looking forward to the chance to crew on the Pacific Cup ocean race from Honolulu, Hi to San Francisco, Ca this summer
I worked on the Future truck Hybrid vehicle design team at Cal poly in 2003, which was very educational and exciting to be involved in. We took a brand new ford explorer and turned it into a Hybrid vehicle running a 2003 VW TDI diesel from a bug, spinning a APU generator from a 727, doing the power management from 3 phase 440 to 300 volts DC, into a custom 600 peak hp electric motor designed for Electric drag racing. Power transmitted through a 1998 suburban transmission & transfer case. The whole truck runs national instruments hardware and software for control and monitoring.
I really look forward to meeting other list members and talking about kitfox (and other assorted) projects. I have a friend who needs hours towards his commercial rating – if you are 2-4 hours from San Luis Obispo by air and want to meet sometime please get in touch !
Happy flying !

hang glider to fast jet. I spent 17 years in the Royal Air Force Volunteer
Reserve. Visited several US bases here including, Bentwaters,Upper Heyford,
Mildenhall, and one in Germany who's name escapes me.
Most of the questions I had while re-building my Kitfox III
were answered before I even asked them. I now have over 100hrs on G-BTSV and
the only disappointment I have is not buying one years ago. Sierra Victor
currently has 400hrs behind a 582 but I am currently converting to a BMW
80hp twin for that little extra speed and economy.

Herb Gottelt
Born in Sudetenland, I was one of many "ethnically cleansed" people thrown
out by the Communists right after WW2. The flying bug caught me early. Having
obtained a private glider license in Germany in '56 and a private power license
here in the US in '58, I had a four year stint in the US Air Force as a
machinist in the aircraft maintenance section of the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing,
serving in France and Germany from '59 to '62. I joined a glider club during
that time and got a commercial glider license. Chuck Yeager was a member of that
same club, but he was transferred two months before I got there.
Upon my honorable discharge I took a job as a machinist/machine builder with a
company who's president had a Mooney. This was as close to a dream job as
anybody could get. I married a German girl "Heidi". We have a son and a daughter
and now two grand children. After 26 years of flying for free, Westinghouse
bought the company and shut us down. With one partner I started my own small
machine shop, specializing in the repair of industrial equipment since 1987.
Suddenly I had no airplane to fly. Renting was not for me due to associated (at
least in my mind) maintenance issues. On my first visit to Oshkosh in '91 I fell
in love with the Kit Fox line and I bought a model 4 kit with a 912UL engine.
The relatively low cruise speed was really a welcome change. Flying on business
from point A to point B can become a job, considering the time constraints often
bordering on "get-there-itis". I wanted to fly for pure pleasure, with a slow
stall speed for safety. It took five long years to finish my Fox. First flight
was in September of '97.
During '98 and '99 I gained the confidence in this wonderful airplane to
undertake longer trips.
With John King as the organizer and leader of the second Alaska trip in 2002, I
had no reservations whatsoever to join this group in an instant. And what an
adventure it was! It was the greatest experience of my lifetime. In my mind this
sounds like an understatement. All pilots bonded wonderfully. Miguel's tragic
death does not diminish this experience; we will never forget him, and I am
thankful and proud to have known him.

N10PG
I was born in 1934 and grew up in Schweinfurt, Germany. My dad flew JU-87
"Stukas" during the war on all fronts. After his return from the war
he
founded one of the first post-war glider aero clubs in Germany. This is where was first introduced to building and flying full-sized flying machines.
Until that time I had only built glider models. After high school I served a
four-year apprenticeship as a machine builder. I immigrated to the US in
1957 with the goal of making flying my career. After building tire plants
for one of the large US tire companies in various parts of the world for
twelve years, I accepted the offer of a German manufacturer to represent
them in the sale of their equipment in North America. This gave me the
opportunity to get my pilot's license and utilize flying (mostly single
engine) in the pursuit of my business.
I have been happily married to Jackie for over 44 years. We have two
children, Tim and Chris, both well established in their careers. We have had
various dachshunds for many years. Presently we have Annie a miniature
longhaired female.
I am retired now and spend most of my time flying and maintaining N10PG, as
well as riding/maintaining my R1200C BMW motorcycle. I built N10PG at
Accipiter Aviation in Longmont CO in 1996. N10PG is a Kitfox 5 tail dragger equipped with NSI Subaru SHO (120 hp) engine and CAP. The airplane is
equipped for IFR, day and night. The airplane was built in 100 days and won
awards at Oshkosh for "Outstanding Workmanship" in 1996 and a Bronze
Lindy
for "Best Kit Built Airplane" in 1997.
Previous to that, I built a Christen Eagle. I flew it for twelve years;
mostly aerobatics, competition and fun.
Before that I built a BD-5 equipped with a turbo-charged 1200 cc Honda Civic
engine. I stopped logging building time after 7,000 hours. I donated the
airplane to the Smithsonian, where it is now on display.

As some are telling their bios I thought I would offer mine for what its worth.
I graduated from high school in 1952. Entered USAF pilot training in 1953.
Received my wings and commission in 1954. As the Korean war had ended, I was
sent home to finish my military commitment in The Air National Guard. I flew
with the Guard until 1964. During this time I flew T-33s, F86s, F89s. C45s and
C47s.
In 1957 I went to work for The Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks as chief pilot.
During my time with the Dept, I was involved with all phases of the Dept, from
game surveys, to fish planting, and personal transportation. I flew most
everything from super cubs to king airs and helicopters. I retired from the
Dept. in 1987.
In 2000, I purchased a Kitfox model 4 Speedster. I have flowned it about 320
hrs, and really enjoyed it.
I have about 16,500 hrs total time.

I've had some great cross countries during the past year to Eastern Canada
and the Utah Canyon lands as well to the Bay Area. Am looking forward to a
lot more during the coming year and hope to meet some of you Lister's as I
travel through your area. Have just about decided to fly to Alaska next
summer and hope that a few Foxes will join me. Also plan flights to
Sun'n Fun, Oshkosh and the SkyStar fly-in.

My Kitfox is in hanger that I built on the waters edge
at my house on
the Wisconsin River in Tomahawk , WI. Flying has been exclusively on the
Full Lotus floats on water, ice, and snow. Living on a river in a northern
climate required floats that could transition from ice along the shore to
water and back onto the ice. The Full Lotus floats do the trick and allow me
to fly year round. Anyone that wants to stop in when passing through
northern WI is welcome.

When ever I get frustrated I review the AD's on Conta-Lyc's
460 hours since June '96. Completed my private license in the 'fox. I
had accrued 175 hours when I took my check ride (a 30-minute
non-event). Part of that time was a solo cross country to the Skystar flyin.
Have assisted, in varying amounts, in the construction of 2
other
'foxes, and an RV6. I am an EAA technical counselor. There is another 'fox
in the works along with a complete set of Hatz Classic wing ribs. It has
been suggested that I fly to support my building habit.
Had a youthful interest in things that moved/flew that was
heightened in

BIOGRAPHY
The Korean War was in full swing the year I graduated from Point Loma High
in San Diego, CA. I had two choices, get drafted in the Army for two years and
get shot at, or join the Navy for four years and see the world. Not fond of
getting shot at, I joined the Navy, and besides my Dad was a career U.S. Naval
Officer, so I did the family thing. I wound up as an electronics technician on a
U.S. Navy submarine. During yard overhaul at New London, CT a General Dynamics
engineer came on board to checkout the boats raiders. I was so impressed with
his job and annual salary that I decided to exit the Navy and go to college on
the GI Bill.
After two years of college I got married and hired on with GE overhauling radar
systems (AN/FPS-8 & AN/FPS-6) for the U.S. Air Force in the Far East. With two
years in Japan, the Philippines, and Taiwan (tax free and full expenses) I
returned to the States to complete my BSEE. On graduating from the Milwaukee
School of Engineering I hired on with IBM to join the Saturn Space Program at
the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.
After the Saturn Program phased out, I worked on the ATS F&G Satellite Program
in Gaithersburg, MD and then on the Trident Submarine Sonar Systems in Manassas,
VA.
On retiring from IBM in 1991 I received my pilot's license (paid for by IBM) and
built my first Kitfox. IBM retirement benefits did not cover the cost of the
Kitfox. :>( As most of you already know, I have had a lot of fun flying to far
of places in my Kitfoxes; first in 1998 with seven other Kitfoxes to Alaska,
second in 1999 to Eastern Canada with four other Kitfoxes, and third to Alaska
again in 2002 with six other Kitfoxes, this time in my new Series 6. This year
on November 1st I have planned a trip to the Bahamas, as far south as the Caicos
Islands and Grand Turk. End of Bio.
Now it's my turn to nominate the next Bio candidate. Chuck Tippett is a good
friend of mine who loves to fly. He'll fly anything, anywhere at any time. He
was one of those 2-strokers until I sold him my Model IV.

(Spam Cans ) are expensive so I built a KOLB and flew it 130 hours.
Then I got bit by the KITFOX BUG and I was hooked. I finished N101XL
in April of 1997. I now have 220 hours on it and love every minute of it.

BIOGRAPHY:
I grew up in an Air Force town and joined the Army out of high school in 74.
I worked in secure communications repair for the Army Security Agency for three
years. I decided to get out of the Army and go to school. I got my commission
and stayed in the reserves working in an air delivery company leading a platoon
of guys repairing parachutes and rigging loads for air delivery. I worked
training as an air traffic controller while in the reserves until I took a
header out of a plane while on a combat equipment training jump. This caused me
to have to quit being a controller because of the pain (I was kinda glad to get
out of that). The Army decided to retire me so now I get a little bit of money
each month plus the benefits. I came to the Washington DC area in 86 to work for
Naval Air Systems Command as a contract specialist. In 1989 I was preparing to
get a familiarization ride in the back of an F/A-18 when the new F-18 program
manager decided he did not want any more civilians on his airplanes. Since I
already had my medical from getting ready for that flight, I decided to go ahead
and get my private pilot certificate. One of the guys in the program office was
a flight instructor at the Quantico MCAS flying club so I joined and a little
more than a year later I got my certificate. A couple of years after that I
decided I wanted my own plane and needed something with folding wings so I would
not have to pay the high tie down fees in the area. About half way through the
building process, NAVAIR moved down to Patuxent River Naval Air Station so I
bought a lot on an airstrip in a private community in Calvert County. John
King's beautiful Model 4 was the first airplane to sit in my hangar. Of course
the hangar was not finished yet but the frame work was there.
Just about the time I was getting close to finishing my Series 5, I met a young
engineer at my EAA chapter Christmas party who was building a Pulsar. She had
her Pulsar in the chapter hangar while working on it and Michael Harter was
renting her hangar. Michael introduced the two of us and I will be forever
grateful to him. My pickup line was "you can use my paint booth." In less than a
year we were married. That was the same year (2000) that I finished my plane in
March and she finished her plane in November. She hated southern Maryland and my
house so she wanted to move to some place in New Hampshire where she had a good
job offer. You know the kind of place that the only thing between it and the
North Pole is a barbed wire fence. They offered me a job at half my current
salary and the closest airport was 40 minutes away with no hangar space. I grew
up in Georgia and feel that Virginia and Maryland are waaaay to cold so I nixed
that idea. She ended up getting a job at a small electronics/sensor building
firm at the end of another private community runway in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
So now we are building another house and hangar in Dogwood Airpark (VA42) in
Fredericksburg, VA. We broke ground in August last year, the drought broke at
the same time (has not stopped raining or snowing) and if we are not in the
house by the end of May, my wife, Suzanne, has a hanging tree picked out for our
builder. With the house there and my job in Southern Maryland, Suzanne has a 7
minute walk for a commute and I had an hour and a half drive each way. That's
fair isn't it? I could not stand the commute so after working at NAVAIR for 17
years I got a job at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in Alexandria, VA just
around the corner from the house I owned while working at NAVAIR in Crystal
City.
On August 11, 2002, my wife gave to me a beautiful daughter, Erin Shea Logan.
She is the light of my life. That light and building the house has kept me from
working on my plane which is currently at the back of a friends hangar. Both of
our planes are out of condition inspection but we should be getting back to them
in about a month and a half. We are really itching to go flying. Of course my
wife gets to fly every now and then when she is testing some of the sensors that
her company makes. This weekend she is GETTING PAID to go to a fly-in with a
friend so she can test the sensors. This will be the first flight for my little
girl too. I don't get to go since I will be finishing off the apartment we have
at the back of the hangar.
